Biometrics Security News and Information
How Many Of Them Do You Have
To all of my subscribers out there, and those who read my blog site as well, I have one favor to ask of all of you. And that favor is, how many pieces of identification documents do you have? I have numerous myself. I have the normal driver's license, credit cards, Social Security card, passport, etc. But have you ever noticed that you have to use multiple pieces for different uses???
Wouldn't it be nice to consolidate all of this, and use just one card for everything, from purchases to verification and identification??? I have eluded to this concept in my previous Postings with regards to the National ID Card infrastructure, and having multiple applications with regards to campus and college Security tied to one primary student ID Card.
How often do you have to fumble around your purse or wallet to find those needed documents??? It can for sure be frustrating. Well, now there may be a solution to this, and believe it or not, it is being implemented in all places, Russia.
The Press Release I came across today details this, and here it is: "The Universal Electronic Card (UEC) introduced recently in Russia is the most complex project in Europe, covering a great number of verticals . . . The European eID cards market has been growing recently. According to the latest Frost Sullivan report for EMEA region titled "World Government and ID Smart Cards Market", the compound annual growth rate (CAGR) in this market will be 4.4% (20082016) with the number of units growing from 388 million to 451 million by the end of this period . . . Many European countries have already introduced the eID program as a way of accessing many institution services with only one eID card . . . The Russian project will allow citizens to not only have access to institution services but also to prove identity and signature and have medical insurance and pension information.
Final Thoughts On Today's Posting
A number of thoughts come across my mind as I read through the Press Release, and formulated my thoughts for this Posting. First, this only underscores my hypothesis of just how far ahead the European nations as well as other countries around the world (especially the developing nations) are in their openness and acceptance of using such a identification card scheme as outlined in the above quote, when compared to the United States.
Theoretically, we are the most technologically advanced country on the face of this planet, but yet we will cannot embrace the idea of having a National Card (or an eID Card as it is known in Russia), for these purposes. We will always be plagued by Privacy Rights issues in this country, which will much further hinder the adoption and growth of a such an infrastructure,ugg australia pas cher, even given its obvious benefits (heck, even I would love to use one ID card for many applications). But enough of my soapbox, I have ranted and raved about this before. Specifically for the Russian example here, there are numerous features:
It can be used as a primary means of verification and identification (no 'duh, right???);
It can be used to pay for tax liabilities (wouldn't that be nice for situations like this when April 15th rolls around???);
Access to civil and social services;
A proof of medical insurance and claims of pension;
Access to just about all types and kinds public transportation;
It can be used as a medical insurance card and as well as for prescriptions;
It can serve as a credit card or debit card;
It can also be used as a voting card.
Wow, just think about all of these benefits!!! The demand for this remains strong in Russia, for example, at the national level, it will be used at 1,000 places, and at the local and commercial levels, some 10,000 applications are expected to use this eID card infrastructure.
Not just in Russia, but the demand for this card infrastructure remains strong in Europe overall, as exemplified by the statistics in the above quote. But, along with these great benefits, come the disadvantages, such as:
The governments around the world keeping track of each and every citizen;
The need to have this type of card infrastructure meet the compliance of international standards (if not, there can be huge costs and expenses, especially in the long term);
This card infrastructure can be used for both contact and contactless solutions;
Since all of the data and information of an individual can be tied to one single card, if it is lost or stolen, there can be grave consequences with regards to Identity Theft.
This project is deemed to be the most complex in Europe in this regard, and is also claimed to be the second largest identification project after the Indian Biometrics project (in which all 1.3+ Billion people will be identified via Biometrics).
